NLC chairman Ajaero has raised alarm over moves to remove minimum wage, allowing state governors to determine wages
Ajaero stated, “While we are here, a Joint Committee of the Senate, the House of Representatives, and the Judiciary is meeting. They have decided to move Section 34 from the Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent List, allowing state Governors to determine wages, effectively eliminating the minimum wage.
“When they conclude that meeting, they will collect the minimum wage themselves, I promise you. The moment the House of Representatives and the Senate pass such a law that does not benefit Nigerian workers, they will become their own drivers and gatemen, and there will be no movement for one month.
“Comrades, I am putting you on standby. If that committee comes up with such a policy, no one should go to work for one month. They are the major threat to democracy in this country. Democracy is not about starving and punishing people. That is not the democracy we fought for.
“They were not there when we fought for this democracy, and now they are trying to make laws to remove wages from the Exclusive List. So, comrades, as I have spoken to you here, I have spoken to everyone. We are waiting for them to come up with such a hypocritical law. From today, let them abolish the security vote.”
Ajaero emphasized that democracy is not about starving and punishing people and that the NLC will resist any attempt to remove the minimum wage from the Exclusive List.
