Court grants ex-CBN governor, Emefiele’s travel request

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, sitting at Maitama, Abuja, on Thursday, varied the bail condition granted to the immediate past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele.
The court had in November granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N300 million with two sureties in like sum.
Justice Hamza Muazu had ordered that each of the sureties must possess landed property worth N300 million within the court’s jurisdiction, with Certificate of Occupancy (C of O), which must be deposited with the court registrar, who will have to verify the property.
Emefiele was ordered to deposit his travel documents with the court and remain in Abuja during the period of the trial.
However, at Thursday’s proceedings, counsel to Emefiele, Matthew Burkaa, SAN, informed the Court that the defendant filed a motion dated January 10 seeking variation of the bail condition to enable him travel within the country.
He urged the court to vary the condition for his client.
Prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, did not object to the application but rather urged the court to ensure that the defendant remains within the country while his trial lasts.
He further asked that the defence team write an undertaking that their client will remain in the country.
In a ruling on the application, Justice Muazu granted the request and ordered that Emefiele should remain within Nigeria for the period of his trial.
Meanwhile, Oyedepo informed the court that the prosecution, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had on Wednesday filed an amended charge against Emefiele and urged that the defendant be allowed to take his plea for the new charge.
Burkaa, however, told the court that the defence was served the new charge on Wednesday and needed time to study it.
Based on the development, the court adjourned sitting till January 19 for the new charge to be taken.
Emefiele was arraigned before the court on November 17, 2023, on a six-count charge bordering on conferring advantage on a female staff member of CBN, contrary to the provision of Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.
In the charge marked CR/577/2023, Emefiele was accused of using his position as CBN governor to award six different contracts to one Sa’adatu Ramalan Yero, a CBN staff member, between 2018 and 2020 to the tune of N1,210,600,000.
The procurement contracts were awarded to a company in which the said Sa’adatu Ramalan Yero is a director.
Emefiele, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Operatives of Special Taskforce Committee Members STF in the state have intercepted fifty bags of iron monazite and thirty eight logs of goska woods worth ten million (10, 000, 000) naira loaded from Serti – Baruwa, Gashaka Local Government Area heading to Lagos State.

The items were intercepted at a military checking point in Malum, Ardo Kola Local Government Area.
In an interview with our reporter, the driver of the truck Shuaibu Abdullahi who claimed to be from plateau state said they loaded the iron monazite and the goska timbers from Serti – Baruwa in Gashaka Local Government Area and are heading to Lagos State for offload.
He confessed that one Hamza Isa from Serti – Baruwa was the one who gave him the items to convey them to Lagos State for onward shipment.
Shuaibu Abdullahi regretted why he accepted the goods pleading to be pardon by the special taskforce committee members STF in the state who are really doing their job without fear or favor.
Similarly, the special taskforce committee members have also seized about one thousand two hundred bags of charcoals worth over six million (6, 000, 000,)naira along Wukari, Bantaje Sabongida axis of Taraba State.
The items were seized following ban on felling of trees and illegal mining in the state by His Excellency Governor Agbu Kefas.
When intimated on the seizures, the chairman special taskforce on environmental protection public safety and prohibition of deforestation in the state Retired General Jeremiah Aliyu Faransa said as far as there is ban on mining and woods logging in the state, he will never hesitate to to arrest and hand over to the mobile court anyone found bridging the executive order.
Faransa added that Taraba State under Governor Agbu Kefas must change the narrative of doing things promising to do his best in the interest of the state.

STF Taraba Intercept Bags of Charcoal in Sunkani

Men of the special taskforce STF have again intercepted 464 bags of charcoal loaded in a trucks in Bakin Dutse, Sunkani, Kasuwan Ladi, Pamanga, Domkolon, Garin Yusuf in Bali and Ardo Kola Local Government Areas of the state.
These trucks loaded with charcoals were intercepted by the STF along the axist of the mention areas while on aerial surveillance.
This is clearly an act of deforestation considering the fact that there's a ban on suspension of mining activities and wood logging in the state by government.
Recall that Governor Agbu Kefas has issued an executive order number three and later number five putting a stop to all these activities until guidelines are made available on how both mining and woods logging are going to be done in the state.
Taraba State is not the only state that have suspended these activities across the country. States like Adamawa, Gombe, Nasarawa among other states in the country have issued an executive order by their various Governors and enacted a laws by the state houses of assembly suspending mining activities geared towards reforming and improving internally generated revenues IGR for state development.
His Excellency Governor Agbu Kefas reasons for the executive order is not far fetched from the interest and desire for building Taraba State looking at the way the state is interms of development.
Recently in a state wide new year broadcast, the governor in his quest to developing the state categorically stated that the task of building the state is not only on him but collective responsibility of the citizens of the state supporting his administration determination of actualizing his good intentions.
Succinctly , this menace are actually coming changing faces from adamant obstructors when His Excellency Governor Agbu Kefas has issued an executive order number three and five suspending mining and woods logging activities in the state.
Charcoal making is really not too far from deforestation since they are both side of same coin.
Chairman Special Taskforce STF retired General Jeremiah Aliyu Faransa opined that the responsibility given to him by His Excellency Governor Agbu Kefas cannot be frustrated by any one in whatever disguise form.
The retired general emphasized that all these activities must be stopped in the interest of the state adding that he will not seat and watch some elements deliberately truncating the good intentions of the governor.
These persons have device another means of felling trees that the Governor has already placed ban on them.

Ishikawa regional authorities released figures on Tuesday showing that 202 people were confirmed dead, up from 180 earlier in the day, with 102 unaccounted for, down from 120.
On Monday, authorities had more than tripled the number of missing to 323 after central databases were updated, with most of the rise related to badly hit Wajima.

The number of first-class graduates from private universities is worrisome; they should be investigated – ASUU

The ASUU president has bemoaned the proliferation of first class degrees by some private universities in Nigeria, while questioning the certificates they award to graduates from such institutions.
He urged the regulatory bodies to beam their searchlights on such private universities to ensure that the certificates they issue to their students are genuine and credible.
“It is happening everywhere and we believe that the regulatory bodies will check it. “In Nigeria today, we have universities where up to 10 – 15 percent of the students are getting first class. Does that happen anywhere? Where will 10 – 15 percent of students get 90 percent because to get a first class you have to score up to 90 percent, 4.5 CGPA.
And the regulatory body is doing nothing about it. It is not investigating it. “Even in UI, one percent cannot get first class but if you go to many of these universities we are creating, you will see 20 percent of students getting first class. It means something is going on.
The NUC should investigate this. When you see things that are not regular you investigate.
That is the function of the regulatory body and 20 percent getting first class means something is wrong.
“These are the things that are ridiculing Nigeria all over the world. “Nigeria should ensure that anybody with a degree is a real degree. People should be rewarded for excellence.
